Robby Meyers has spent his entire life in the shadow of his talented, athletic older brothers. But unlike Pete and Gus, he's small, and better at starting fights than finishing them. This is a very readable, interesting story of one high school kid's attempt to fit in and find his place in a new school. In the coming-of-age category, this one is unique for its cast of characters and south Florida setting. Christie delivers grittiness, honesty, and charm to get the reader's attention. l was eager to watch (the main character) Robby's new beginning unfold, and see the complex social dynamics of high school play out. The ending was suspenseful; his new friendship's are put to a consequential test and he has to decide where to place his trust.For someone out of high school like myself, reading this book was like going back in time and experiencing those days again. It was a realistic depiction of the hectic social world. Joel doesn't leave out the small details that make that period of life disarmingly and embarrassingly funny. I couldn't help but laugh at the sibling trash talking and awkward lunchroom conversations, where no one gets off easy. Christie doesn't shy away from the darker side, either. Robby has to jockey his way through prideful, tough, and sometimes violent characters that don't give anyone any slack.
For a first novel, Christie has made a fantastic book. Its suitable for anyone who is in high school or wants to take a trip down memory lane. I am excited to see what comes next.

If you like intense thrillers that combine elements of realism and rite of passage, Robby Fights the World is for you. New author, Joel Christie, makes a stellar debut with this novel that will have you on the edge of your seat and, when complete, wishing it was only book one in a trilogy.
I read an advanced copy before the book went to the editors, and I really enjoyed it - any editing could only have made it better. I found the rough and tumble world of high school to be pretty close to how I remembered it, and I found myself connecting with Robbie's life in Weston, FL. Joel doesn't hold back from presenting the darker realities of school life which for me adds to the authenticity. I thought almost all of the characters were interesting and believable, and I found myself turning pages quickly to find out what happened next. I think any young adult who enjoys reading will like this book, especially young guys who are athletically inclined.
Anyone who reads this book will find a way to connect back to the awkward time known as high school. It is well-written, flows nicely and was a page turner for me. Read it in about a day.
