DEMYSTIFYING THE JOB SEARCH PROCESS IN QUANTITATIVE FINANCE a practical guide for entrylevel quants eBook James Lin
I have never realized that I was a disadvantage candidate until I came across this book. It was like the "Eureka" moment, explaining all the things that are happening to me. For example, how all my applications submitted through various company websites did not get any response. The more you keep submitting, the more you feel that it is like a black hole sucking all your energy away. As mentioned in the book, I also discovered that some jobs are posted there by headhunters just to lure candidates, while in reality there is no such opening (I found in Google archive that the same job posting was reposted again and again over a number of years). So yes, the book is helpful since you no longer need to waste your time going through such time-wasting processes that the author has been through and proven that they do not work, at least for a disadvantage candidate like me. In addition, the book does show in details about what works (transforming yourself to headhunter using Linkedin), and solid steps in how to achieve there. Although I am still in the process of building my network and cannot 100% confirm whether you can land your dream job using this method, I can at least confirm that professionals on Linkedin are very helpful and kind enough to answer sincere questions related to their industries. For my case, I did get a list of awesome companies to apply for which I wouldn't otherwise know.
Overall, this is a book that shows you what not to spend your time on, and start thinking about a more innovative way that gives you an edge in your quant job application.

DEMYSTIFYING THE JOB SEARCH PROCESS IN QUANTITATIVE FINANCE a practical guide for entrylevel quants eBook James Lin Reviews
This e-book, currently only available on the (but readable on apps for the PC and other devices), is expressly written for what the author calls a "disadvantaged candidate" in quantitative finance. He says if you satisfy some or all of the following conditions, you are a disadvantaged candidate and can potentially gain from the firsthand insights he gained from five years of job hunting and shares in the e-book
1.You are an entry-level candidate
2.You require work permit to work in the U.S.
3.The financial job market is in recession
4.Your school is not considered top-tier in the quant finance community
5.The connections between your school and the quant industry are weak
6.Your communication and interview skills are not strong
7.You live or study far away from any major financial centers
The job search ideas the author puts forth are very interesting and many are helpful. The last chapter, clarifying how to get certified in C++ (and doing so on a shoestring), is terrific. As reflected in my own book on quant job search (Starting Your Career as a Wall Street Quant A Practical, No-BS Guide to Getting a Job in Quantitative Finance, revised edition), I do not share his highly positive assessment of LinkedIn -- I'm rather critical, and wary, of such social networking sites, not the least out of concerns for either identy theft or alienating potential employers -- but he describes some useful ways for the "disadvanted candidate" to think outside the job search box and bat for a more likely home run, especially in these difficult times. Indeed, for what the author calls the disadvantaged candidate, a careful and prudent use of LinkedIn and other social networking sites can bear fruit - just keep your expectation realistic and follow the author's advice on how to approach a potential contact.
Compared to my own career guide for quant finance (mentioned above), this e-book has a narrower focus, in terms of both the target audience and the scope of the job search process. The author writes in a straighforward and frank manner, and does not waste space telling you useless things that won't help you in your job search endeavor.
If you fit the criteria list given above (or even if you don't but need some more ideas regarding finding real quant job opportunities), I think James Lin's book is a worthy read. Currently it's only available for the e-reader (a PC app is available so you don't actually need to own a device to read books).
Disclosure I bought a copy of this e-book myself, out of my own pocket. I have no affiliation with James Lin, the purported author of this e-book. (I don't own a , but read the e-book on the app for Windows.)
For those of us that have not yet joined the world of quant. A nice introduction how to start your search. Obviously the best way 'in' is through networking, but James explains how to build this precious network nearly from scratch.
Unlike many materials written on the subject, this manual is primarily written for individuals who are not the most obvious candidates for quantitative finance or financial engineering jobs. In the manual, these individual are referred as "disadvantaged candidates" or DC. Being a DC myself, I found this manual very useful and I changed my way of thinking about the entire job hunting process in the quantitative finance.
The most important asset of the book is that the author tells his own stories of entry level job hunting in quantitative finance, dealing with headhunters as well as his experience after he landed his dream job. He touches various issues ranging from how and where to find quantitative finance/ financial engineering job openings in the first place to how to impress potential employers and get your dream job. The author explains the role that networking with other people close to the field plays. Different techniques on how to network through different social media are also discussed very well. Things that DCs have to know about improving their CV, interview strategies and how to deal with the headhunters are also given due attention and explained in great detail.
The manual gives special emphasis on interview preparation techniques that are unique to quantitative finance jobs and that are not found much in other widely available interview prep books. Although that is the most important aspect of the manual, it also gives insights about the generic interview strategies from a different perspective. The material is well prepared, well written and elaborated with carefully selected examples and excellent analogies. I strongly recommend individuals who are planning a career in quantitative finance to read this manual. Although the manual is primarily written for DCs, I believe other people can also benefit a lot from it.
I have never realized that I was a disadvantage candidate until I came across this book. It was like the "Eureka" moment, explaining all the things that are happening to me. So yes, the book is helpful since you no longer need to waste your time going through such time-wasting processes that the author has been through and proven that they do not work, at least for a disadvantage candidate like me.
